About The Noisettes
Shoniwa, Smith and
Morrison all went to the
BRIT School for
Performing Arts and
Technology, Croydon.
Noisettes started taking
shape in 2003 when
Shoniwa and Smith, both
from the band Sonarfly,
began writing songs and
playing with drummer
Jamie Morrison. Jamie
Morrison was previously
involved in several acts
like Living With Eating
Disorders, Willis,
Jaywalk Buzz etc. The
band began performing
around London and
quickly developed
somewhat of a reputation
for their high energy
live performances.
Noisettes also began to
gather interesting
reviews including in an
article from USA Today’s
article on the British
music scene, which
mentioned, “The
incendiary Shingai
Shoniwa leads this
London blues-punk band,
known for its feral and
explosive live show.”
After working on it for
two years following the
band’s inception, their
debut album What’s the
Time Mr. Wolf? The album
was released on Vertigo
records in the UK in
2005 and made it to #75
on the UK Albums Charts
and spawned singles like
IWE, Scratch Your Name,
Sister Rosetta (Capture
The Spirit), and the
last single the Count of
Monte Cristo. Despite
its lukewarm success,
the band still managed
to create a stir and get
positive critical
reviews.
In 2008, Noisettes,
along with several other
acts like Paul Weller,
Andy Rourke from The
Smiths, Graham Coxon and
Supergrass, among
others, performed at
Camden’s Roundhouse in
March 2008. The bands
performed an exclusive
version of a specially
written track apart from
their own respective
material, in aid of a
homelessness charity
known as Crisis
Consequences.
Early in 2009, the bands
single Don’t Upset the
Rhythm was featured in
an advertisement for
Mazda 2. The single was
from Wild Young Hearts,
Noisettes’ second album,
which was released
shortly after the
single. The album peaked
at #7 on UK album
Charts. Don’t Upset the
Rhythm made it to number
2 on the UK Singles
Chart. Wild Young
Things, the first single
from the album to be
released is supposedly
to feature in a Danone
advert. The third single
from the album Never
Forget You peaked on UK
charts at #20.
The band has toured
extensively both in
Europe and the US. They
have also supported acts
like Muse and are slated
to open for Lady Gaga’s
Fame Ball Tour. The band
has also performed on TV
several times for shows
like BBC 1’s Jonathan
Ross Show, and The Wendy
Williams Show. Their
music has been used in
TV shows such as The
Sopranos and Bionic
Woman.
