About Nelly Furtado
Nelly Furtado was born
on the 2nd December 1978
in British Colombia,
Canada. Of
Portuguese-Canadian
origin, Nelly is now a
highly successful singer
songwriter, enjoying
worldwide success with
three hit albums and a
string of hit singles.
Nelly enjoyed moderate
success in her home
country in 1997,
following a performance
in Honey Jam, an all
female talent show. This
performance and the
subsequent interest in
Nelly’s vocal ability
and the demos she had
produced ultimately led
to her securing a record
deal with Dream Works
Records in 1999. Later
that year Nelly’s first
single, Party’s Just
Begun (Again) was
released on the
Brokedown Palace: Music
from the Original
Soundtrack album.
Nelly’s first taste of
worldwide success came
with the release of her
first album, Whoa,
Nelly!, which was
released in October
2000. The first two
single releases from the
album, I’m Like a Bird
and Turn Off The Light
went on to become
international top ten
hits, the former
reaching #1 in her home
country. A third single,
On The Radio(Remember
the Days), enjoyed more
moderate success. To
promote the album, Nelly
headlined the Burn in
The Spotlight Tour and
featured on Moby’s
Arena: One tour. Whoa,
Nelly! ultimately went
on to receive four
Grammy Award nominations
in 2002 and I’m Like A
Bird won Best Female Pop
Vocal Performance.
Folklore became Nelly’s
second album release in
November 2003. Although
less commercially
successful than her
first album, the album
still saw the release of
three moderately
successful singles -
Powerless (Say What You
Want), Try and the
official anthem of the
2004 European Football
Championship, Força,
which translates as
`strength’ or `carry on’
from Portuguese.
The most successful
period of Nelly’s career
to date came with the
release of her third
album, Loose, in the
summer of 2006. A
worldwide success, the
album went on to reach
#1 in several countries,
including the USA and
Canada. The album also
spawned her first UK #1
single, Maneater, and
two USA #1 singles with
Say It Right and the
Timbaland collaboration,
Promiscuous. Say It
Right went on to become
Nelly’s most successful
worldwide single, partly
due to its popularity in
Europe, where it reached
#1 in several countries.
The fourth single
release from the album,
All Good Things (Come to
an End) became another
worldwide hit, reaching
#1 in several European
countries as well as her
home country. In early
2007, Nelly embarked on
her sell-out Get Loose
worldwide tour, which
ultimately led to the
release of her first
live DVD/CD, Loose the
Concert.
Later that same year,
Nelly featured alongside
Justin Timberlake on the
Timbaland single Give It
to Me, which went on to
be another worldwide
smash, becoming her
third US and second UK
#1s. More recent single
chart success came with
Broken Strings, a duet
with James Morrison,
which went on to reach
#2 in the UK in January
2009.
