About Lady Gaga
The eldest child born to
Italian American parents
in New York, Lady Gaga
was interested in music
from an early age and
had quite an
extraordinary childhood.
She learned to play the
piano since the age of 4
and was composing her
own ballads by the age
of 13. By the age of 14
Lady Gaga was performing
at open nights at
various clubs. At 17 she
procured an early
admission in the Tisch
School of Arts at NYU,
becoming one of the 20
children in the world to
ever have been thought
worthy of this
consideration! During
her time at Tisch, Lady
Gaga studied music and
widened her song-writing
canvass by studying,
analysing and writing
about topics ranging
from religion, art and
socio-political order.
It was around this time
that Lady gaga started
developing her music as
well as her image. She
was interested in
combining her love for
pop, fashion and
theatre, so coming
across the work of Glam
Rockers like Queen and
David Bowie must have
been like a revelation
to her. Lady Gaga’s
career began with
performances in various
Lower East Side clubs
and performances at
Burlesque shows. Music
producer Rob Fusari is
said to have compared
her vocals to Freddie
Mercury and nicknamed
her Gaga. The name stuck
and so Lady Gaga was
born.
In 2007 Lady Gaga
collaborated with Lady
Starlight, a performance
artist, and together
they developed a live
performance piece known
as Lady Gaga and the
Starlight Revue. The duo
and their act received
much popularity during
this time and in August
they were invited to
perform at Lollapalooza,
the American music
festival. The
performance received
brilliant reviews and
was critically
acclaimed. Gaga had
worked the glam rock and
vintage pop element into
her electro-dance music
by this time, finally
finding her niche. Gaga
has written for artistes
like Britney Spears, The
Pussycat Dolls and
Fergie, among others. It
was Akon who convinced
Interscope Records to
sign her as a vocal
artiste as he believed
that apart from writing
and live performances,
she was also a singer of
high calibre.
Lady Gaga’s debut album,
The Fame was released in
2008. The album is a
creative mix
incorporating elements
from many different
genres and musical
styles. Around this time
Gaga started
collaborating with a
creative collective
known as Haus of Gaga,
which works on
developing Lady Gaga’s
stage sets, stage image
as well as sound. The
album made is to the top
spot on the UK chart, as
well as in Austria,
Canada and Ireland. The
lead single Just Dance
was a worldwide success,
making it to #1 in UK,
America, Ireland,
Canada, Australia and
the Netherlands. Just
Dance received a Grammy
Nomination for Best
Dance Recording. The
second single Poker Face
was an equally huge hit
if not bigger. It peaked
at number 1 in nearly
twenty nations and was
the second consecutive
Gaga single on Billboard
Hot 100.
Gaga has also received
critical acclaim for her
first North American
live tour the fame ball
tour that began in March
2009. From a good little
girl going to a catholic
to a self proclaimed
exhibitionist, fashion
obsessed style icon, and
hugely popular
singer-songwriter-performer,
Lady Gaga has certainly
broken all the barriers
and come out on the
other side, all in
style.
