About Jennifer Hudson
Hudson hails from
Illinois, Chicago and
has been singing since
her childhood. Whitney
Houston, Aretha Franklin
and Patti Belle are some
artists who influenced
and inspired Hudson to
sing and achieve what
she has, and continues
to achieve today. It was
American Idol that gave
Hudson the break that
she very much needed and
deserved, and Hudson is
known to have been
working at a Burger King
in Chicago prior to
this.
Hudson’s journey in the
show was far from smooth
sailing. She was not
voted through to the
finals and was brought
back into the top 12
finalists as a wildcard
entry by Randy Jackson.
Before becoming a
popular favourite,
Hudson received the
second lowest votes
twice in the show!
Despite heavy praise
from all three judges
and significant public
support, Hudson was
finally eliminated in
the ‘Top 7’ Show of the
series.
Hudson’s eponymous debut
album was released in
2008. The album opened
at number 2 on the
Billboard 200. The
certified Gold album saw
her collaborating with
several artists like
Timbaland, Missy Elliot,
Harvey Mason and Ne-Yo
to name a few. It was
for this album that
Hudson received three
Grammy nominations and
won a Grammy for Best
R&B Album. Hudson is
said to be working on
her second album which,
once again, is slated to
be produced by Ne-Yo.
Hudson faced grave
personal tragedy in
2008, when her mother,
and 29 year old brother
were found shot to
death. A few days later,
Hudson’s 7 year old
nephew, who was reported
missing was also found,
shot to death. Her
sister’s ex husband was
charged with the
murders.
It was with Dreamgirls
that Hudson began her
career as an actress.
The film was released in
January 2007. Her
performance in the film
was generally much
lauded but she was
specifically praised for
her performance of the
song And I Am Telling
You I’m Not Going. The
song became a huge hit,
and Hudson won the
Golden Globe for Best
Actress in Supporting
Role. In February,
Hudson won the Academy
for Best Supporting
Actress. She has won
several other awards for
her role in Dreamgirls.
Hudson also appeared in
Sex and the City, the
movie, as Carrie
Bradshaw’s assistant.
Following this, Hudson
played the role of
Rosaleen in the movie
The Secret Life of Bees.
The film was a huge box
office hit, and also
received several award
nominations and wins.
This includes the two
People’s Choice Awards
that the film won as
Favourite Drama Movie
and Favourite
Independent Movie.
