About Jay Sean
Jay was born in London
to immigrants from
India. He was recognised
as having musical talent
from a very young age
and had even formed a
hip hop duo with his
cousin. He went on to
study medicine at Queen
Mary's college London
but dropped out of his
course in order to
pursue a career in
music. Jay is a popular
name in India and Sean
means shining star in
the Indian language.
His first real break
into the music industry
came in 2003 when he
signed a £ one million
deal with virgin records
and had a top twenty hit
with his first record
called Dance with you.
He managed a top ten hit
with Eyes on you which
was his second single.
This peaked at number
six and Jay went two
better when his third
single Stolen peaked at
number four.
There was much success
to be had with his début
album Me against myself
which went straight to
number one in India and
sold over two million
copies. There was also a
brief appearance in a
Bollywood film for which
he supplied the
soundtrack. After
several complications
and delays concerning
his second album he felt
forced to leave virgin
records.
His return came in 2007
with his singe Ride it
which was from his new
album My own way. The
album was the first
produced by his own
company and managed
number six in the
charts. There were three
top twenty singles in
the album. This earned
him a nomination for
best UK male.
During the 2008 MOBO
awards, Jay announced
that he had signed with
the hip hop label Cash
Money Labels. This meant
he would be the first
British-Asian artist to
sign with an American
record company.
Jay's first ever
American single was
called Down which went
to the top of the
Billboard charts and
managed to knock off the
Black eyed peas. He
won three awards at the
UK Asian music awards
including Best male,
Best urban act and Best
album.
Jay announced in 2009,
on American TV, that he
was recording five new
songs for the American
version of his album My
own way some of which
were with LIL Wayne, a
hip hop colleague of
Jay.
Jay has dedicated much
of his time to community
causes including the BBC
blast which aims to give
something back to the
community. He has a
variety of awards to
boast of including seven
Asian music awards, BMI
and MTV awards and two
MOBO awards. He has
three albums and eight
singles. He hasn't had a
number one album or
single in the UK but has
topped the Billboard
charts in the US and UK
R ‘n’ B charts.
