About Jason Mraz
American
singer-songwriter Jason
Mraz was born in
Mechanicsville, Virginia
on 23 June 1977.
Descended from a
Czechoslovakian
grandfather, the name
Mraz means “frost” in
Czech.
The singer attended The
American Musical and
Dramatic Academy in New
York, where he studied
musical theatre.
2002 Waiting For My
Rocket To Come, The
first major label album
from Jason Mraz, reached
number 55 on the
Billboard Hot 200. It
was released on Elektra
Records and produced by
John Alagia. The single
The Remedy (I Won’t
Worry) reached the top
20 in the USA. Jason
wrote the song after his
outlook on life changed
when a good friend was
stricken by cancer. The
song was produced by
music production team
The Matrix. Also
featured on the album
was the song Curbside
Prophet, a version of
which was used on the
soundtrack of the 2004
film New York Minute.
In 2005, Mr A-Z sold
over 100,000 copies in
the USA, this second
album reached number 5
on the Billboard Hot
200. Released by
Atlantic Records, and
produced by Steve
Lillywhite, the album
was nominated for a
Grammy Award in the Best
Engineered Album,
Non-Classical category.
The album includes a
song called Mr
Curiosity, which
features an operatic
solo performed by Jason
Mraz himself. During the
2007 season of American
Idol, contestant Chris
Richardson performed the
song Geek In The Pink
from this album which
very much raised the
profile of the song and
Jason himself.
2008, We Sing We Dance
We Steal Things was
commercially successful
worldwide, this third
album from Jason Mraz
reached number 3 on the
Billboard Hot 200. Jason
Mraz’s most successful
hit single to date I’m
Yours was featured on
this album.
The single I’m Yours was
the first US top 10 hit
for Mraz, and reached
number one in New
Zealand and Norway. It
received Grammy
nominations for Song of
The Year and Best Male
Pop Vocal Performance in
2009. The song has
broken the record for
the most weeks spent on
the Billboard Hot 100,
having spent 74 weeks in
the chart! The record
was previously held by
Leanne Rimes for the
song How Do I Live. I’m
Yours is also the third
US bestselling digital
download of all time,
having sold 4.4 million
copies.
We Sing We Dance We
Steal Things features 2
notable collaborations.
One with British singer
James Morrison on the
track Details in The
Fabric, and another with
Colbie Caillat on Lucky.
The album was released
in May 2008 and has sold
over 1,000,000 copies in
the USA alone. It has
been certified as having
achieved Platinum sales
status by the RIAA. The
album title comes from a
painting by the artist
David Shrigley, which
Jason saw whilst
travelling in Scotland.
Jason Mraz supported
Alanis Morrissette
during her Jagged Little
Pill tour in 2005. He
also opened for The
Rolling Stones for 5 of
their shows in November
2005.
As well as enjoying
considerable success in
the music industry,
Jason Mraz also owns an
avocado farm in San
Diego.
