About Chipmunk
Chipmunk, born Jahmaal Noel Flyffe to Jamaican parents, is a nineteen year old London based solo rapper. The artist has had a particularly successful year what with winning the 2009 MOBO Award for Best Hip Hop Act, beating mega successful contenders for the award such as Jay-Z, Eminem and Kanye West. Chipmunk also won the Best Newcomer MOBO award in 2008.

Flyffe grew up in the Tottenham district in north London, and was given the nick name Chipmunk by an elder (older boy) on the estate. The boy was later killed in an unprovoked street attack and the name stuck as a symbolic gesture of remembrance. In spite of growing up in and surrounded by the harsh realities of life, Flyffe chose to concentrate on his passion for music instead of turning into a statistic himself.

The first time Chipmunk ever rapped was at the Finsbury Park youth club. By the time he was sixteen, Flyffe was already well known in the grime scene. This was on account of the three acclaimed mix tapes he had released previously. During this time Flyffe also spent time in education and managed to get ten A-C Grades at GCSE, talk about teen role models!

Chipmunk’s first single Beast was released in December 2008 on the independent Alwayz Recordings Label. The music video was the single that was released on Youtube in November 2008. The single didn’t do phenomenally well on the UK Singles Chart, with a peak position of 181. Beast is the first single from his debut album I am Chipmunk, which released in October this year. 2008 proved to be a good year for Chipmunk, when he won the Best Newcomer 2008 MOBO Award.

The second single from I am Chipmunk was Chip Daddy Chip, released in February 2009. The single made it to number 21 on the UK Singles Chart. Diamond Rings followed Chip Daddy Chip with a release in early July 2009. Diamond Rings received much critical acclaim and was well received, reaching number 6 on the UK Singles Chart. It was praised by the BBC blog, which gave the track four out of five stars! Digital Spy also commended the track with three out of five stars.

I am Chipmunk released in October 2009 and recently Oopsy Daisy recently made it to the top spot on the UK singles Chart. Chipmunk has collaborated with several artists on this album, including Tinchy Stryder on the track Man Dem and N-Dubz on Lose My Life, among others. In 2008, Flyffe featured on Ironik’s single Tiny Dancer (Hold Me Closer) along with Elton John. The single was successful making it to number 3 on the UK Singles Chart.
