About Calvin Harris
Harris was influenced by
electronic music in his
teens and had started
making his own music at
home by the time he was
16. He has been known to
work using inexpensive
equipment and post his
‘home-made’ Electroclash
music on social
networking sites like
MySpace. Harris’s work
is said to be influenced
by artists like David
Bowie and Prince. In
2002, the Prima Facie
label released two of
Harris’s singles, Da
Bongos and Brighter Days
on a 12” club single,
but under the name
Stouffer. Calvin, hoping
for bigger fish to fry,
moved from Dumfries to
London. But with only so
much work to his credit,
Harris, still in his
teens, found it
difficult. Let me know
with artist Ayah was
released during this
period in 2004. Unable
to find a job, Harris
supposedly returned to
his home town Dumfries
but continued to work on
his music and post his
work on MySpace and
other online platforms.
This practice paid off
when a representative
from EMI heard some of
Harris’s work on MySpace
and signed him with the
label in 2006. From then
on, Harris has only been
frying the biggest fish
in the sea!
In 2007, Calvin Harris
released his debut album
I Created Disco. The
first single from I
Created Disco,
Acceptable in the 80s,
made to the top ten on
UK’s charts. The second
single, The Girls, made
it to top 5. Harris
toured the UK supporting
Faithless and Groove
Armada to promote his
album, which ultimately
went on to become a
gold-selling album.
Harris has collaborated
with Kylie Minogue on
her album X, released in
2007, on which he
co-wrote and produced
two tracks, In My Arms
and Heart Beat Rock. The
2008 UK number one
single Dance Wiv Me, was
a collaboration between
UK Rapper
Dizzee Rascal
and
Calvin Harris.
Throughout his musical
career so far, Harris’
work has been nominated
for many awards. In
2009, He won the music
producer’s guild award
in the Best Re-mixer
category for Dance Wiv
me. Dance Wiv Me also
won the Best Dancefloor
Filler NME award in
2009.
Harris’ second studio
album, Ready For the
Weekend was recently
released in August 2009
in the UK. The first
single from the album,
I’m not Alone, released
in April 2009 and went
on UK singles Charts at
number one on downloads
alone. The single Ready
for the Weekend is
currently on UK charts
at number four.
The rest of 2009 will
see Calvin Harris
touring extensively to
promote his new album
and singles, all of
which have already
proven to be a huge
success in the UK.
Harris will be touring
the UK, America,
Netherlands, Ireland and
France.
