About Bloc Party
Bloc Party was formed by
Orkeke and Lissakk in
1999 during the Reading
Festival. Moakes and
Tong joined later in
response to Orkeke and
Lissakk’s quest for band
members.
Silent Alarm, the debut
album was released in
early 2005. The album
received highly positive
reviews internationally,
was critically acclaimed
as well as commercially
successful. Silent Alarm
was named album of the
year by NME, Indie Album
of the Year by PLUG
Awards 2006, and was a
certified platinum
selling album in the UK.
So Here we Are/Positive
Tension, the first
single from Silent Alarm
made it to UK Top ten.
The following tracks
like Banquet and
Helicopter made top 20.
Bloc Party toured the US
in support of Silent
Alarm, which had
received good reviews to
begin with. Chemical
brothers, a well known
electronic group
collaborated with Orkeke
on Believe on their
album Push Button. The
band released a remixed
version of Silent Alarm
featuring remixes by
Death From Above,
Ladytron, M83 etc.
A Weekend In The City,
the second album leaked
in November 2006 but was
officially released in
February 2007. The album
reached number 2 on UK
Album Charts, as well on
Australian and Belgian
Charts. It made it
number 12 on Billboard
200. The Prayer from A
Weekend In The City
became the band’s
highest charting single
in the UK, making it to
number 4 on UK Singles
Charts. In America,
another single I Still
Remember became the
band’s highest charting
single, reaching number
24 on the Modern Rock
Chart.
Intimacy was released
around October 2008,
featuring singles like
Trojan Horse, Signs and
One Month Off. The band
toured America following
the release of Intimacy.
Bloc Party announced
they would embark on a
UK tour, for the first
time since December
2007. The tour is stated
to begin in October and
is titled Bloctober. In
May, Bloc Party released
a remixed version of
Intimacy, entitled
Intimacy remixed.
Bloc Party are known to
have a varied sound over
the course of their
musical career. Their
music is said to be
inspired by Joy
Division, Suede, The
Cure, Blur, Radiohead,
and The Smiths. It is
thought that while
Silent Alarm was loosely
based on Moake’s musical
influences, A Weekend In
The City was Lissakk’s
preferred sound, and
Intimacy featured Tong’s
choice of musical
styles. If this is to be
believed, the band’s
fourth album is set to
rely heavily on Orkeke’s
inspirations.
