About Basshunter
Starting in 1999, Jonas
Erik Altberg came up
with his own stage name,
Basshunter, and began
releasing his own music
through a website he
created on his own.
Through clever online
marketing and a
considerable amount of
raw talent and appealing
personality, he was able
to release his first two
albums and eventually
get signed by Warner
Music.
Yet, his rise to fame
wasn’t as swift as it is
for those who are
discovered by typical
means such as singing at
local events and in
night clubs until
someone with enough
clout to give them a
chance walks in and
makes the discovery.
Basshunter had to wait,
since he was going with
the times and creating
his own path to musical
success. His first album
was released directly to
his website and was
titled The Old Shit.
While he was working as
a DJ at the time in his
homeland of Sweden, he
was a completely unknown
entity in the music
world.
In 2004 he followed up
with his second album
titled The Bassmachine.
Once again, he released
this album directly
through his website,
where he was starting to
get quite a following
from fans who visited
the page by the
thousands per day to
check for something new
form the up and coming
in artist.
Eventually, the
discovery did come and
Basshunter was picked up
by Warner Music in 2006.
He released his first
single under the label
right away, titled Boten
Anna. That song went to
the very top of the
Dutch Top 40 chart,
putting the artist on
the road for wider fame.
The following year
brought his big
introduction to the rest
of the world with the
popular song Now You’re
Gone. The song was
picked up in the UK and
hit the singles charts
for about a month. The
Swedish singer has
officially gone from a
no-name singer releasing
his own music through
the Internet to a
multinational star with
fans flocking to that
website from all over.
Now You’re Gone: The
Album was his next
release, hitting his
fans in July of 2008.
One year later it was
announced through his
booming website that he
would produce another
album in September of
2009.
Basshunter may not be a
huge phenomenon around
the world just yet, but
he is an example of how
technology has the
capability of changing
the music world. Some of
the best and most
reputable producers and
artists are scouring the
Internet every day in
search of the next big
star, much like they
used to scour popular
local music venues.
Rising stars have more
opportunity these days
to lift their own
careers off the ground
using a variety of
online resources.
